JULY 11
Over 30,000 Srebrenica survivors and their supporters attended the ten-year commemoration on July 11, 2005, which featured speakers from the United States, Bosnia, and several other European countries. The names of the individuals whose remains were buried on this day were listed in alphabetical order on a poster displayed in a glass case at the entrance to the Srebrenica-Potocari Memorial and Cemetery. Following the speakers, Bosnian Muslim men and boys prayed before the rows of coffins in the field and then formed a human chain to carry them to their grave sites. The burial of the 610 coffins involved hundreds of people and lasted for several hours. The names and ages of all those to be buried were read aloud during this time. Following the burial, the cemetery was again silent – each grave a permanent reminder of the betrayal of Srebrenica.
